Filipino Math Wizard Wins World Competition

BEIJING — Farrel Eldrian Wu, a six-grader from the New Life Christian Academy in Taguig, won a gold medal and ranked first in the primiary division individual contests of the Mathematics Competition held in Beijing, China from November 2-6.  Wu was of the delegates from the Philippines to the 2011 World Mathematics Team Championship.

Farrel was part of “Philippines Team 1” along with other elementary school students Clyde Wesley Ang, Miguel Lorenzo Ildesa, Andrea Jaba, Sedrick Scott Keh and John Aries Ceazar Hingan.

The group placed second over-all in the team contest.

The teams were ranked by total scores and each of the top six scoring team members received a medal and a certificate.

For the individual awards, in each division, the top 10% scorers received gold medals, the next 20% received silver medals, while the next 70% scorers received bronze medals.

Previously, the 11-year old Wu, also won gold medal in the individual category of the 14th Po Leung Kuk Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC) held in Hong Kong in July 2011.  He was the youngest of the Philippine delegation to the prestigious math competition.

At that time, City Mayor Lani Cayetano awarded Wu with a Plaque of Appreciation and 10,000 Pesos cash incentive.
