MANILA -- Filipino sailors aboard foreign ocean-going vessels wired home a total of $3.4 billion in 2009, up $366 million or 12.06 percent from $3.034 billion in 2008, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) reported over the weekend.
TUCP secretary-general and former Senator Ernesto Herrera said Filipino sailors based in Europe remitted $1.156 billion last year, up $509.594 million or 78.82 percent from $646.406 million in 2008.
Gordon Brown has called for a "new deal" on energy at talks in Saudi Arabia on the high price of oil.
The prime minister wants oil producers to invest in a £100bn drive towards long-term energy projects in Britain, such as wind farms and nuclear power.
At the Jeddah Energy Meeting, Mr Brown also pressed for an increase in oil production to help bring down prices.
The Conservatives said Mr Brown did not understand the oil market. The Lib Dems accused him of a "futile gesture"...
MANILA (March 27) -- Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said this morning that the Philippines is now being recognized as one of the best performing economies of Asia because of President Arroyo’s economic and fiscal policies.
In an interview with Radyo ng Bayan, Remonde cited Business World’s report showing that “the peso has outperformed most emerging market currency so far this year and is likely to prove a strong value in 2009 as the Philippine economy is least vulnerable to the factors of hammering markets elsewhere.”
MANILA -- The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) has assailed the Department of Finance (DOF) for asking President Macapagal-Arroyo to veto a provision in the proposed new Migrant Workers Act that exempts the money wired home by overseas Filipino laborers from the documentary stamp tax (DST).
"Malacañang should reject outright the DOF's foolish and contemptible request," said TUCP secretary-general and former Senator Ernesto Herrera.
Chancellor Alistair Darling says pay rises for people "from the boardroom to the shopfloor" need to be "consistent" with the 2% inflation target.
He told BBC One's Andrew Marr show the need to keep inflation under control "applies to each and every one of us".
He said above-inflation pay increases would be "extremely damaging".
Mr Darling said the UK economy was "far better equipped" than in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s...
