NEW YORK, NY - The Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) Diwa ng Kalayaan (Spirit of Independence) number one beauty, brains and talent title in the Filipino and Filipino-American community of the Northeast, if not the entire United States, was won by a performing arts college student from New Jersey.
Kristine Liwag, who was born in New York City 18 years ago last March to Lourdes Sardoma and Ramon Liwag romped away with the most coveted title among 16 to 22 years old Filipino descent dalagang Filipina (single Filipino young ladies). The Liwag family now make their home in Union, New Jersey and TinTin, as Kristine is nicknamed, goes to Kean University’s Academy for the Performing Arts. She has a sister named Vanessa.
The Diwa ng Kalayaan (Spirit of Independence) search and selection is conducted annually as one of the major commemorative events of the celebration of the anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence, this year the 115th.

NEW YORK – The search for 2013 Diwa ng Kalayaan (Spirit of Independence) and Mrs. Kalayaan (Mrs. Independence) is now open, the Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) has announced. The winners of the two contests will reign for the duration of the 115th anniversary commemoration of the Declaration of Philippine Independence being celebrated this year.

The deadline for submission of entries to the Diwa ng Kalayaan contest is April 5, 2013.

CHICAGO (jGLi) – Miss Philippines Janine Mari Tugonon nearly delivered her surprise Christmas gift to the Filipino people when she ended up being the first runner-up to Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island during the coronation night in Las Vegas, Nevada Wednesday (Dec. 19).
During the pre-pageant interview beamed during the pageant, the 23-year-old pharmacy graduate from Balanga, Bataan disclosed, “If I win, it’s like I give the Philippines hope and happiness and Christmas gift this coming Dec. 25.”

AMSTERDAM (March 16) - Woven Chic, an exhibition of Philippine-made handbags designed by internationally acclaimed Filipino designer Cora Jacob opened March 5 at the Museum of Bags and Purses (Tessanmuseum Hendrikje) in Gentleman's Canal, Amsterdam.
Cora Jacob or Cora Jacobs, as she is known internationally, has earned the title in the Philippines and in fashion capitals around the world as the "Indigenous Genius". The lawyer-turned designer took New York by storm during the 80's when her Ecologically-Chic handbags made of raw materials from the Philippines like bamboo, jute, raffia (grass), sugarcane, shells, beads and leather, landed on the shelves of high fashion stores like Bloomingdale''s and Sak's Fifth Avenue.
