Jersey City School Board Reorganizes; Lavarro-

JERSEY CITY, NJ -- At its reorganization meeting on Wednesday, April 25, Sue Mack, who lost a council seat to Fil Am Rolando Lavarro, Jr. in a hotly contested special election last November, was elected president of the Jersey City school board together with Marvin Adames, a municipal prosecutor in Newark, as vice president.  She replaces outgoing president Sterling Waterman.

Mack, who was first elected to the nine-member board in 1996, previously served as president from 2000 to 2002. According to the Jersey Journal, she was thrilled at her election and was quoted to have said that her "taking back the presidency allows her fellow board members to perform the work, which they are so eminently qualified to perform...while I take care of policy and procedures."

Mack obtained seven votes; Carol Lester, outgoing vice president abstained and Sangeeta Ranade, a newly elected board member, missed the vote.  Meanwhile, Adames received all nine votes.

The three vacant slots were filled by newly elected board members Marilyn Roman, Vidya Gangadin, and Sangeeta Ranade of the Parents for Progress team who were all endorsed by Councilman-At-Large Rolando Lavarro and Steve Fulop, Ward E Councilman.  Fulop, 2013 mayoral candidate, previously supported the nine-member board including the three newly elected members.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy had supported an opposing slate in the election.

The Jersey City Board of Education is comprised of nine individuals elected by the residents of Jersey City.  Board Members act as advisors to the Superintendent and the schools’ administrators, and serve as liaisons between the schools and people in the community.  They are elected to three-year terms and fulfill their responsibilities without benefit of pay or other compensation.  The new Board will select Jersey City’s new superintendent and manage a budget of over $650 million.
