FilAm Scrabble Player Lands 2nd Place In Tournament

NEW JERSEY -- Two middle school students from New Jersey won second place at the 2012 National School Scrabble Championship (NSSC) held in Orlando, Florida, April 13-14, at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort. 

The pair, Filipino American 8th grader Nicholas Vasquez and 6th grader Thomas Draper, of Millburn, NJ -- known as the Da Talisman Honchos -- came behind Andy Hoang and Erik Salgado, both 8th graders from Cary, North Carolina.

CHICAGO (jGLi) – When reigning WBC Super Lightweight World Champion Erik “El Terrible” Morales stakes his belt in a 12-rounder against undefeated Danny “Swift” Garcia at Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas on Saturday (March 24), they have the social media sphere, “Twitter,” to thank for for promoting their bout.

Perhaps, taking a page from boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who waxed poetry to enjoy the edge in his heavyweight fights, in twits posted on the website of the Golden Boy Promotions, the Mexican champion Morales, wrote, "I'm going to change my name from 'El Terrible' to 'El Profesor' because I'm going to take @DannySwift to school.

Hirvonen a class apart on Monte Carlo Rally

Ford Fiesta S2000Last year's World Rally Championship runner-up, Mikko Hirvonen, was the class of the field on the 2010 Monte Carlo Rally, winning the event in a new Ford Fiesta S2000 after leading from start to finish on its competitive debut.

Hirvonen and co-driver Jarmo Lehtinen mastered treacherous winter conditions in the mountains of southern France to reach the Monaco harbour finish in the early hours of Saturday morning with a winning margin of 1min 51.4sec.

Filipinos hold 11th Sports Fest in Xiamen

XIAMEN (May 8) -- To celebrate International Labor Day holiday, the Filipino Association in Xiamen (FAX) organized a SportsFest with the theme "Summer Fun 2009".  About 150 members of the Filipino community living and working in the neighboring cities of Quanzho and Jinjang attended the event on May 1  held at the Xiamen Gang Wu Culture and Sports Center.

Undefeated Boxing Champion Pays Fine; Set To Serve Prison Sentence Jan. 6

CHICAGO (jGLi) – A week before he enters prison, American boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. settled Friday (Dec. 30) a misdemeanor battery charge filed against him by a security guard he poked in the face in  2010 by paying a $1,000 fine.

Mary Ann Price, spokesperson of the Clark County Court in Las Vegas, Nevada, told this reporter over the phone it was Mayweather’s private defense lawyer, Karen Winckler, who paid the $1,000 fine on behalf of Mayweather, who was not present before Department 3 Judge Janice Marshall, as Mayweather pleaded no contest to the complaint filed by Shane Smiths.

Young Filipina Wins Inaugural China Golf Tourney

Beijing, CHINA -- Ma Andrea Victoria Unson of the Philippines put up a steady performance under a windy condition to win the women's title of the 2011 Fangshan Changyang China Amateur Golf Championship yesterday at the Beijing California County Golf Club.

China's Wang Ziyi showed she was the title contender after hitting four birdies in the front nine but succumbed to the 16 Filipino hitting a double on Hole 14, and finished second with one stroke back for an even-par, three round total of 216 shots.

It was a sweet revenge for Andrea after she lost to Wang in the HSBC junior tournament in January.
