If it were not the reputable Readers Digest, I would have said that the survey on the most, and the least, trusted among very well known personalities in the Philippines was very naughty. The timing isperfect, not just that the presidential race is heating up in all directions, but just after the Villar camp comes up with surveyresults claiming that he has a trust rating higher than Noynoy Aquino.

Next week, the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution will be replayed in the minds of many. There will be mixed reactions, of course. Some, like the youth who were too young then, or not yet born, there is little or nothing to be remembered. Others, like those from the extreme Left or rebels from the military, would remember lost opportunities. To many, though, EDSA One was a miracle called freedom, the liberation of a people from the clutches of dictatorship.

At a time when a candidates\’s credentials and vision for the country ought to be the focus of the campaign, it is the opposite that happens. Many political operators and their image doctors are naturally hampered by the baggage of their own candidates and must find ways and means to win nevertheless. The most common option, therefore, is to try to bring down all rivals who are ahead of their candidate clients by highlighting the negatives of these rivals – whether true or not.

It is amazing how elections in a world run by electronic media can overload Filipinos with information, most of which are junk. After all, at the end of each day, one can reflect and be surprised that of the ton of data that he received, most were unsolicited. And of that ton of information, maybe only a kilo of it was worth remembering, much less processed intellectually.
