NEW YORK, March 24  (AP) -- Filipino star Manny Pacquiao has been voted fighter of the year by the Boxing Writers Association of America after a dominating win over Oscar De La Hoya.

Joe Calzaghe was runner-up, but voted manager of the year on Tuesday for guiding his own career. The undefeated former super middleweight champion recently retired.

The super bantamweight rubber match between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez was chosen fight of the year. Vazquez won the fight by split decision.

The awards will be presented at the annual BWAA dinner on June 12 in New York.

It is the second time that Pacquiao will receive the award (Edward J. Neil Trophy) for his feat in 2008 after being honored in 2006 for his two knockout wins over Erik Morales and lopsided decision victory over Oscar Larios.

Apart from the De La Hoya welterweight win, Pacquiao also defeated Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico at super-featherweight and David Diaz of the US at lightweight.

Pacquiao is also the only boxer from Asia who has been bestowed the honor since it began giving out the award in 1938 and one of a few second-timers.

Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Evander Holyfield and Sugar Ray Leonard have won the award thrice, while joining Pacquiao on the roster of two-time awardees are George Foreman, Floyd Patterson, James Toney, Pernell Whitaker, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler and Mike Tyson.

The awards night will be held at the plush Capitale on Bowery Street in New York. Expected to join Pacquiao in the event is his promoter, Top Rank big boss Bob Arum. (AP)
