NEW YORK – The US Open tennis tournament is expanding its main draw to 15 days in 2025, starting on Sunday, August 24th. This marks the first time in the Open Era that the tournament will begin on a Sunday. The expansion aims to accommodate the increasing demand and record-breaking attendance in recent years. The first round of the men’s and women’s singles will now be played over three days, from Sunday to Tuesday.
This change will allow 70,000 attendees and six new ticketed sessions, including day and night sessions for Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium. The USTA hopes this move will provide more access for fans and increase revenue through ticket sales.
The 2024 Men’s tennis champion is Jannik Sinner. He won the men’s singles title at the 2024 US Open by defeating Taylor Fritz in the final with a score of 6–3, 6–4, 7–5. Sinner also earned the 2024 men’s singles ITF World Champion award.
Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek is the 2024 Women’s tennis champion. She was named the women’s singles ITF World Champion for 2024. Swiatek had an impressive year, capturing her fourth Roland Garros title and winning four WTA 1000 titles. She also earned a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Tennis Event.
Swiatek’s consistent performance throughout the year helped her secure the top spot, narrowly edging out Aryna Sabalenka.
