NEW YORK – The Association of FilAm Teachers of America (AFTA) will kick-off its celebration of its Silver Jubilee on May 31, 2014 at the Astoria World Manor with the theme Pagbabaliktanaw at Pagdiriwang sa Pakikibaka at Pagpupunyagi ng mga Gurong Filipino sa Amerika. Highlighting the event will be the presentation of the Crystal Apple Service Award to deserving teachers.
AFTA will be honoring Filipino or Filipino American teachers who have worked for five years or more in the U.S. for their dedicated service and in recognition of their hardwork, fine teaching ability, and excellent work ethics. AFTA said the award is a fitting tribute to teachers who have faced and continue to cope with the challenges of teaching in an altoghter different milieu than they had experienced before.
Ferdinand Suba, a respected FilAm lawyer, community leader and AFTA’s current legal counsel, will deliver the keynote address.
“He is expected to give an inspirational talk to the incoming board of directors as they embark on the challenging task of managing the many projects of the association and ensuring the fulfillment of AFTA’s mission ‘to strive, maintain and persevere in achieving the highest level of competency in the teaching pofession’ for all the members,” said Raul Cajigas, Ph.D, incoming president of AFTA.
Consul Kira Christianne Danganan-Azucena, representing the Philippine Consulate General in New York, will deliver Consul General Mario de Leon, Jr.’s remarks. She will also formally induct into office the newly elected officers and members of the Board of Directors for 2014-16 term.
According to AFTA, Consul Danganan-Azucena is the designated officer of the Consulate who will be coordinating with AFTA the Paaralan sa Konsulado, a joint project of the Consulate and the association. Its 16th season will begin this summer for children between the ages of 5- to 18 years old.
Representing New York City at this event is Council Member Daniel Dromm. He will be speaking about current educational issues affecting city schools. A multi-awarded former city school teacher himself, Councilman Dromm is the chairman of the NYC Council Education Committee.
AFTA’s 2014-2016 officers and members of the Board of Directors are: Raul Cajigas, Ph.D., President; Rena Pedaria, Executive Vice President; Juanito Hingpis, Vice President for Development; Dara Valconcha, Vice President for Chapter Operations; Kristian Penas, Executive Secretary; Lino Arca, Jr., Assistant Secretary; Kelly Golden, Membership Secretary; Josey Dimaliwat, Treasurer; Virginia Pablo, Assistant Treasurer; Mercy Dungog, Auditor; and Gamaliel Diaz, Milyn Tuvilla, and Rosie Prado, Publicity and Public Relations Officers. Board members are Nellie Gabatino, Olive Ledres, Maggie Nierva, Miliza Romero, Orlean Sorio, Victoria Dietz and Editha Plecis. Three former presidents who will serve as Board Advisers are: Josefina Badana, Lilia Juele, and Pacita Ros.
