MADRID, Spain — Filipino tennis star Alex Eala made a striking appearance at the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday, stepping onto the red carpet in a beige modern Filipiniana that celebrated both her heritage and her rising global profile. The 20‑year‑old athlete attended the ceremony in Madrid just days before opening her campaign at the Mutua Madrid Open, one of three major clay tournaments on her spring schedule.

Eala, who trained at the Rafael Nadal Academy, shared a moment that quickly gained traction online: a selfie with tennis legend Novak Djokovic and Olympic champion Eileen Gu. “Sandwiched between greatness,” she captioned the photo, capturing the excitement of being among the world’s top athletes at what is often called the “Oscars of Sports.”

Her gown was designed by her uncle, internationally recognized Filipino designer Rhett Eala, adding a personal and cultural touch to her appearance at the Palacio de Cibeles.

Rising WTA Standing and Recent Performances
Eala enters the Madrid Open with renewed momentum, having climbed to World No. 44 in the latest WTA rankings—her highest standing to date.

Her clay season began with mixed results: a second‑round finish at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz Open and a first‑round appearance at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, both WTA‑500 events. These early matches, however, form part of a broader buildup toward the Grand Slam stretch.

Eala is slated to face a qualifier in her Madrid opener, with match schedules to be finalized by tournament organizers. A strong showing could further boost her ranking ahead of the season’s most demanding clay events.

Packed Clay Campaign Before the French Open
Following Madrid, Eala is confirmed for two more tournaments in Italy: the WTA1000 Rome Open and the WTA125 Parma Ladies Open, where she aims to sharpen her clay‑court rhythm.

All roads lead to Roland Garros, where Eala will compete in the French Open main draw for the second time in her career. The tournament runs from May 24 to July 7, marking her second Grand Slam appearance of the year after making her main‑draw debut at the Australian Open in January.

Later this season, she is also expected to compete at Wimbledon and the US Open, completing a full Grand Slam calendar—an increasingly rare feat for players her age.
