Luke 14 closes with Jesus using an everyday product, salt, to remind His followers what our purpose in life should be.
Luke 14:34-35: “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is not fit for the soil nor for the manure pile, but it is thrown out.”
What good is salt if it is no longer salty? Salt has lost its purpose and is ineffective. In biblical times, salt was not a pleasant spice, but it was a preservative for food, keeping it from spoiling. Jesus is saying that as followers of Jesus, we are to live in a way that makes it clear what Jesus does in our lives.
We are to be the light, the salt that will be like Jesus in this world. We are to be different than sinners so that people will be attracted to Jesus.
If we are going to be like salt, we need the fruit of the Spirit produced in our lives. Galatians 6 shows us that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
Are we still salty, or have we lost our purpose as followers of Christ?
