CEBU, Philippines — A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck northern Cebu on Monday afternoon, April 6, 2026, sending residents rushing outdoors as tremors rippled across the Visayas.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake struck at 3:22 p.m., with its epicenter 17 kilometers southeast of Bogo City, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The quake was tectonic in origin, PHIVOLCS said, and was felt across Cebu, Leyte, Masbate, Biliran, and parts of Negros. Instrumental Intensity IV shaking was recorded in San Francisco (Cebu) and Hilongos and Villaba (Leyte).

Despite the widespread shaking, no major damage or casualties were immediately reported.

Residents Recall Sudden Shaking; Officials Urge Caution
The tremor triggered brief panic in parts of Cebu, especially in northern communities still recovering from the deadly 2025 M6.9 quake that killed more than 50 people. “Mabaw siya… mao nga nabati gyud,” said Engr. Robinson Jorgio, PHIVOLCS Visayas Cluster OIC, explained that the quake’s shallow depth made the shaking more noticeable.

Jorgio added that the initial reading of 5.4 was later refined to magnitude 5.1 after more data came in, though PHIVOLCS’ official bulletin still logged the event at 5.4. “Gi‑adjust na siya after mas daghang data…” he said.

He emphasized that quakes of this magnitude “are not typically expected to cause structural damage,” though unsecured objects may fall.

Local governments conducted rapid inspections of public buildings, while emergency teams monitored reports of aftershocks. PHIVOLCS confirmed that aftershocks are expected, though none had caused additional impact as of press time.

Infrastructure Holds; Power Grid Stable
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported that Cebu’s power transmission network remained fully operational. “The grid remains intact… no reported cases of power interruptions or damaged transmission facilities,” NGCP said in an advisory.

Transportation and telecommunications services also continued without major disruption. Local disaster offices said they were maintaining heightened alert status until aftershock activity subsides.
Authorities urged residents to stay away from weakened structures and to report any cracks or damage to barangay officials.

Context: Cebu’s Seismic Vulnerability
Monday’s quake comes just months after the September 30, 2025, magnitude 6.9 earthquake, one of the strongest to hit Cebu in centuries. That disaster left over 50 people dead, including 30 in Bogo City, and caused widespread infrastructure damage.

While the latest tremor was far weaker, PHIVOLCS reminded the public that Cebu sits near active fault systems capable of generating strong ground shaking.

The agency reiterated its call for preparedness: securing heavy furniture, identifying safe spots at home and work, and participating in regular earthquake drills.

Officials Call for Calm, Preparedness
Cebu provincial officials assured the public that response teams remain ready. “We continue to monitor all municipalities for any delayed reports of damage,” one provincial disaster officer said in a radio interview, urging residents to remain vigilant.

PHIVOLCS likewise encouraged calm. “Earthquakes of this magnitude are part of normal tectonic activity,” Jorgio said, adding that communities should “stay alert but not alarmed.”

As of Monday evening, Cebu remained stable, with life returning to normal even as aftershocks continued to be recorded.
