NEW YORK – The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), headed by Secretary Francisco P. Acosta and Under Secretary Astravel Pimentel-Naik, invite all overseas Filipinos in the US East Coast to participate in the Online Ugnayan sa East Coast scheduled on 30 July 2021 (8:30 – 11:30 am US Eastern Standard Time) via Zoom and Facebook Live.
This is the first CFO Online Ugnayan for 2021 and the fifth in the series of Ugnayan Webinars launched by the CFO since the COVID-19 global pandemic.
With the theme Opportunities for Diversity and Inclusion in the New Normal, the Ugnayan is co-convened by the Philippine Embassy and POLO in Washington DC and the Philippine Consulate General in New York.
The US is slowly recovering and adapting to a new normal after more than a year of grappling with the virus. The pandemic has disrupted and affected economic activities, delivery of some government programs and services, and the normal day-to-day life of people worldwide. The pandemic, which the World Health Organization declared a “global health emergency,” has overwhelmed the healthcare system, claimed thousands of lives and adversely affected overseas Filipinos.
As of July 2021, the Department of Foreign Affairs reported that the total number of overseas Filipinos afflicted with COVID-19 reached more than 20,000, with over 1,200 casualties, in 95 countries, including the US — the top destination country for Filipino emigrants and marriage migrants. Aside from many health worker frontliners and OFs who lost their lives, thousands have lost their jobs and were forced to return to the Philippines. With thousands of overseas Filipinos affected by COVID-19, the CFO remains committed under the “New Normal” in assisting them and innovating its programs and services, including the Ugnayan.
CFO has invited Filipino American community leaders, Presidential awardees, professional organizations, and experts to discuss the initiatives and issues, and challenges faced by Filipinos in the US during this COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ugnayan is a flagship program of the CFO that aims to strengthen motherland ties and link Filipino communities abroad.
