Chicago Consulate Seeks Earthquake Assistance

by Joseph G. Lariosa

CHICAGO (FAXX/jGLi) – The Philippine Consulate General in the Midwest thanked Thursday the people who condoled with victims of the devastating earthquake in Bohol and Cebu in the Philippines last Tuesday.

At the same time, Rey Anub Juan, a native of Bilar, Bohol and a member of the Confederation of Boholanos in U.S.A. and Canada (CONBUSAC) and a resident of Toronto’s suburb of Brampton, Canada, said his Conbusac group is going to hold an emergency meeting this weekend “for updates and organizing groups that will be involved” in disaster relief.

More than 150 people died and hundreds more were injured when a 7.2-magnitude earthquake ravaged the two islands in the Philippines that affected 3.2-million in 1,080 villages. The earthquake also displaced 47,067 residents and damaged 2,066 houses.

The devastation also destroyed 20 bridges and four roads were rendered impassable in Bohol, the epicenter of the quake that isolated many areas.

Initial estimate of cost of damages has been placed at 75.15-million pesos (US$1.7-million), P17.65-million of which is in Cebu, P57.5-million in Bohol.

The earthquake also damaged not only lives and property but also infrastructures and national landmarks, including the fabled Chocolate Hills and century-old Catholic churches. Philippine government agencies, including the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), have mobilized to conduct rescue and relief operations.
