NEW YORK – Fresh from her historic run at the Miami Open, where Alexandra Eala made history as the first Filipina to break into the WTA Top rankings with No. 75, her next stop is the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers to be held from April 10 to April 13 at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as part of the Cup’s Group II Asia/Oceania. About 146 nations have entered to compete across all levels of competition in 2025.
The participating teams in Group II Asia/Oceania include the Philippines, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, and Malaysia. These teams will battle for promotion to Group I in a round-robin format.
Eala is the captain of this year’s Philippine women’s squad, which is actively preparing for the Cup. Training sessions are focused on building team cohesion and refining strategies to compete effectively in Group II Asia/Oceania matches. Chris Cuarto coaches the team and has been instrumental in guiding them through their preparations and strategy for the tournament. His leadership is expected to be key in their performance in Group II Asia/Oceania matches.
In 2024, Denise Dy, a former SEA Games gold medalist and longtime national team member, served as team captain. Under her leadership, the team achieved an impressive feat by being promoted to Group II. This was thanks to standout performances by players like Eala, the highest-ranked player in the tournament, and Marian Capadocia, who delivered dominant victories.
Dy is not joining the Philippine tennis team in 2025 because she continues to serve as the head coach for the women’s tennis program at Fresno State University. Her commitment to coaching and developing players at the collegiate level has been her focus since 2020.
Cuarto’s leadership and strategic guidance were pivotal in the team’s triumphant return to the tournament after a three-year hiatus at the Renouf Tennis Centre in Wellington, New Zealand, in 2020. The team dominated the pool stage, winning all their matches. However, in the playoff match, they faced a tough challenge against the host nation, New Zealand, and narrowly missed promotion to Group I. The team showcased strong performances, with players like Marian Capadocia and Khim Iglupas leading the charge in singles. The doubles team, which often featured Anna Clarice Patrimonio, also delivered solid results.
Each team competes against all other teams in a round-robin format and will have three matches: two singles and one doubles. Every team has an equal opportunity to play matches, and the results from all these matches are used to determine the rankings. The top teams are based on their overall performance, like total wins or points earned.
The Philippine Team
As team captain, Eala will be joined by talented players, including Marian Capadocia, Khim Iglupas, and Shaira Hope Rivera. This is the same team that earned promotion to Group II Asia/Oceania after their impressive performance in Bahrain.
The 2025 team has formed a strong bond representing the Philippines internationally. Each player has her unique strengths and performs with pride and determination. Their collective efforts highlight the growing potential of Philippine tennis.
The team has been shaped by the remarkable contributions of its key players, such as Eala, who has brought international recognition to Philippine tennis. Her victories in junior Grand Slam tournaments and her experience training at the Rafael Nadal Academy have elevated the team’s performance and inspired younger players. Cappadocia consistently performs in regional competitions like the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games. She has been a reliable presence for the team, showcasing her skills and determination on the court.
Iglupas is known for her strong baseline game and has contributed significantly in doubles matches, forming effective partnerships with her teammates. Rivera’s agility and tactical play have made her a valuable asset in both singles and doubles matches, adding depth to the team’s lineup.
Historically, the team has faced tough competition but has consistently demonstrated resilience and growth. Their participation in events like the Billie Jean King Cup highlights their commitment to competing at the highest levels. With Eala leading the current team, there’s a lot of excitement about their potential to achieve even greater success.
Key players of team participants
Observers say the Group II Asia/Oceania competition is quite balanced, but a few teams stand out based on their players’ rankings and recent performances.
For instance, Indonesia has Beatrice Gumulya, the gold medalist of the 2024 SEA Games women’s tennis singles. She showed exceptional skill and determination throughout the tournament, solidifying her position as one of the top players in the region. Aldila Sutjiadi is a double specialist with a solid singles game, contributing significantly to Indonesia’s team success.
Akgul Amanmuradova from Uzbekistan is a seasoned player with years of experience who brings depth to her team.
The Hong Kong (China) team has a strong and competitive squad that includes key players such as Eudice Chong, Cody Wong Hong Yi, Tiffany Wu, Maggie Ng, and Zhang Ling, the team captain. According to a news outlet, the team has a history of strong performances and is set to compete in Group II.
Sri Lanka has emerging players stepping up, though they are still building their international presence. Pakistan is developing its roster, focusing on younger players gaining exposure.
While these teams have standout players, the round-robin format often brings surprises, and every team has a chance to shine.
The Billie Jean King Cup Regional Groups
In the Billie Jean King Cup, the regional groups are divided into four levels: Groups I to IV, with Group I being the highest and Group IV the lowest. These groups are further divided by regions: Asia/Oceania, Europe/Africa, and Americas.
The number of groups in each region depends on the number of participating nations. For example, Asia/Oceania and the Americas regions typically have Groups I to III. Europe/Africa region often includes Groups I to IV, as it combines two continents and has more participating nations.
Each Group is structured with round-robin pools, and teams compete to promote or avoid relegation within their respective levels.
The 2024 Billie Jean King Cup is a team competition with no individual singles or doubles champions. Instead, the tournament focuses on national teams competing in ties, including singles and doubles. Italy emerged as the overall champions, defeating Slovakia in the finals held in Málaga, Spain.
