BRUSSELS (July 9) — Mindanao will be receiving additional grant of Euro 3 million (approximately P200 million) from the European Commission, its Humanitarian Aid Department has announced. This humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by the conflict in the southern province of the Philippines is in addition to the Euro 6.5 million given in October and December 2008, and the Euro 3 million in rehabilitation assistance provided in October 2008.
The additional grant will be implemented over a nine-month period and is earmarked to provide food and nutrition, water and sanitation and primary health care. As in the past, the funding will be channeled through international organizations in coordination wtih the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the National Disaster Coordinating Council.
The European Commission has been providing development and humanitarian assistance to Mindanao for several years and is supportive of the Philippine Government’s efforts to promote peace and security in Mindanao.
