On May 7, join the Malaya Movement as we share the stories of political prisoners in the Philippines—their lives and struggle for genuine freedom and democracy in the country—and launch our Political Prisoner support campaign.
Panelists from the Philippines, including representatives from Kapatid, the National Union for People’s Lawyers, the Committee for the Freedom of Leila De Lima will illuminate not only the dire conditions that political prisoners face, most especially now under the brutal dictatorship of President Rodrigo Duterte but also their continued fight for the causes that they believe in and continued organizing the people even from behind bars.
Under Duterte, draconian de facto martial law policies have led to an incredibly high increase in the use of trumped-up charges against peace advocates, youth and student leaders, land defenders, trade unionists, indigenous people, housing rights activists, teachers, lawyers, faith leaders, and so many others, as a means to suppress those who are critical of the regime.
In the last 5 years alone, the number of political prisoners has increased by 67%—the highest increase since the time of dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Even under the pandemic, there continues to be a rise in mass incarceration, by Duterte’s design. Already facing squalor conditions in severely overcrowded Philippine prisons, political prisoners are under even more risk as COVID-19 spreads across jails and across the country due to the Duterte regime’s failed response.
Political prisoners are being punished for fighting for the rights of the people—which the Philippine government perceives as a threat. They have not given up hope, and neither will we.
Join the Malaya Movement as we continue to rise up with them against the injustices they have dedicated their lives to fight against. Help us bring them home by joining our campaign to provide them tangible support and advocate for their immediate and unconditional release! Free all political prisoners!
