FDNY to host fire safety events

by Kobakila News

NEW YORK (March 5) — The New York City Fire Department will be hosting fire safety events at major transportation hubs across the 5 boroughs on Friday, March 6th to encourage New Yorkers to replace the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they change their clocks this Sunday for Daylight Saving Time.

The FDNY Foundation, in a new partnership with Duracell, is providing “the power to protect” in the form of 50,000 batteries to be given out to the community. Teams of educators from the Fire Safety Education Unit will be assigned to densely populated communities that are at high-risk for fires to distribute batteries and spread the important message of fire prevention. In addition, educators will be handing out important literature and fire safety information that can be displayed in homes to remind residents about fire prevention. This literature is available in English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Urdu, Arabic, Russian, Yiddish and Italian.

“New York City has seen fire related deaths drop to record lows over the past decade,” said Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta. “Still, many of these deaths are preventable. Each one reminds us that we must continue to educate the public that a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector is the simplest way to protect yourself and your family from a fire.”

In 2008, the FDNY and the FDNY Foundation distributed more than 250,000 batteries and 30,000 smoke detectors. More than 660,000 New Yorkers were instructed on protecting against fires at home at more than 9,300 fire safety presentations.
