NEW YORK – Hurricane Idalia, described by the National Hurricane Center as having catastrophic impacts from storm surge inundation of 2 to 16 feet above ground level, and destructive waves are expected somewhere between the Wakulia/Jefferson County line and Yankeetown, in Florida.

In an advisory issued as of 11 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, August 29, it said there is the potential for destructive, life-threatening winds where the core of Idalia moves onshore in the Big Bend region of Florida, with hurricane conditions expected elsewhere in portions of the Hurricane Warning area along the Florida Gulf Coast.

Additionally, the advisory said strong winds will also spread inland across portions of northern Florida and southern Georgia near the track of the center of Idalia, where Hurricane Warnings are in effect. Residents in these areas should be prepared for long-duration power outages.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), their incident Management Assistance Teams are “deployed to affected areas to provide support as needed and additional supplies and teams are on standby.” Hurricane Idalia is projected to land in Florida on Wednesday, August 29, and officials have issued warnings it could turn into a Category 3 storm.

The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., has likewise issued an advisory notifying Filipino communities along the path of the hurricane “to monitor the movement of the storm, undertake all necessary preparations, and heed the warnings of local officials as it strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph.”

The Philippine Embassy said there are about 160,000 of Filipino descent in Florida.
