NEW YORK — Filipino American scientist Dr. Michael D. Purugganan, a leading figure in plant genomics and evolutionary biology, has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science (FAS) at New York University, one of the largest academic divisions in the United States. NYU announced his appointment this week, describing him as “a distinguished scholar whose leadership has strengthened NYU’s scientific enterprise.”

Purugganan previously served as Dean for Science at NYU and holds the title of Silver Professor of Biology, one of the university’s highest academic distinctions.

From UP Diliman to Global Scientific Leadership
Born and raised in Manila, Purugganan completed his early schooling in the Philippines before earning his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1985. He later pursued graduate studies in the United States, receiving his M.A. in Chemistry from Columbia University and his Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Georgia.

Before joining NYU in 2006, he taught at North Carolina State University, where he became a leading researcher in plant evolutionary genomics. His work has been published in Nature, Science, and PNAS, and he has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

“Dr. Purugganan has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship,” NYU Provost Georgina Dopico said in the university’s announcement.

Fil-Am Community Celebrates Historic Appointment
Filipino Americans across New York and the academic community in the Philippines welcomed the news, calling Purugganan’s appointment a milestone for representation in U.S. academia.

The Philippine Consulate General in New York welcomed the announcement, noting that Filipino excellence in global academia “continues to bring pride to the Filipino community.”

The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) also highlighted the significance of his new role, saying Purugganan’s leadership at NYU reflects “the growing visibility and impact of Filipino Americans in science and education.”

“Over the years, Dr. Purugganan has made significant contributions to science, research, and academic leadership, inspiring students, colleagues, and the broader scientific community through his work and service,” the Philippine-American Academy of Science & Engineering (PAASE) said in a statement congratulating Purugganan. “His appointment to this important role reflects the respect and trust he has earned throughout his career”.

At the University of the Philippines, officials noted that Purugganan remains one of UP Diliman’s most accomplished alumni, with his career serving as an inspiration for young Filipino scientists pursuing global research careers.

A Vision for NYU’s Future
As dean, Purugganan will oversee more than 1,000 faculty members and over 20,000 students across humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences programs. In a statement released by NYU, he said he is “honored to serve a community defined by intellectual rigor, creativity, and a commitment to global engagement.”

Purugganan begins his term this summer.
