NEW YORK—Following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from his reelection bid and “pass the torch to a new generation,” his supporters transitioned their name from Filipino Americans for Biden-Harris into Filipino Americans for Harris (FAFH). They endorsed Kamala Harris as the 2024 Democrat’s nominee for President.
In a statement, FAFH said that Harris has “shown unwavering dedication, dynamic leadership, and a visionary approach to addressing the most pressing issues facing the nation.”
FAFH 2024 praised Harris’s “commitment to justice, equality, and opportunity for all Americans” and said, “It resonates deeply with the Filipino American community.” FAFH also recognized her achievements and tireless advocacy for marginalized communities,” which have “made significant impacts, ensuring every voice is heard and valued.”
The FAFH is co-chaired by three Filipino Americans based in California. They champion Filipino Americans’ involvement in politics and serve as a voice of their community. It is a multi-generational volunteer group of Filipino Americans who support and endorse Kamala Harris for President and Democrats running for Federal, State, and local elective office. The Harris for President Campaign is officially recognized as an AANHPI affinity group.
Melissa Ramoso, councilmember and former mayor of Artesia, California, said, “It would be a historic milestone, representing a profound moment of pride and progress for the nation” to have Harris elected as the first Asian American and the first Black woman president in the Oval Office.
“This is a powerful testament to the values of diversity and inclusion that the country strives for, bringing hope and inspiration to millions of people from all backgrounds,” Ramoso said.
A long-time community advocate, Genevieve Jopanda, said Harris’ election would “highlight, demonstrate, and capture the importance of diversity and the contributions of Asian Americans and women in shaping the future of the nation.” She is an alumna of the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) and former Chief of Staff to California State Treasurer Fiona Ma.
Jopanda said Harris’ candidacy symbolizes the potential to “achieve greater representation and influence at the highest level of government and service.”
A former political organizer, Mario Salazar, said Harris “has consistently supported policies that benefit Filipino Americans, from healthcare reforms to economic initiatives.”
“Her commitment to comprehensive immigration reform and standing against anti-Asian hate has been particularly meaningful to our community,” Salazar added.
With Biden’s endorsement of Harris, polls began to reflect growing Harris momentum. In 24 hours, Harris received over $80 million in campaign donations and obtained enough delegates to secure her nomination.
FAFH reminded supporters that with 105 days left until the election, it is crucial to activate the community now. “This election represents a step towards greater inclusion and recognition,” FAFH said. “The Filipino American community is ready to work tirelessly to ensure her victory.”
In his speech at the Oval Office on Wednesday evening, Biden said, “I revere this office. But I love my country more.” He acknowledged the need to sacrifice personal ambition to unite the party and for what he sees as the greater good.
FAFH said Harris’ leadership promises to build on progress and pave the way for a brighter future that all Americans deserve.
