MANILA — The United States Embassy in Manila is urging more Filipino students to pursue higher education in the United States, citing a decade-long surge in enrollment and growing opportunities for academic exchange. Embassy officials said the trend reflects strengthening people‑to‑people ties between the two countries.
Five Years of Steady Growth
Data from the 2024 Open Doors Report of the Institute of International Education (IIE) shows that 4,120 Filipino students were enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities during the 2023–2024 academic year — a 7% increase from the previous year. The Philippines has now recorded five consecutive years of growth, with enrollment figures as follows:
2022–2023: 3,880
2021–2022: 3,320
2020–2021: 2,820
2019–2020: 3,320
Over the past decade, the number of Filipino students in the U.S. has grown by more than 50%, according to data from IIE and the U.S. State Department.
“The United States continues to welcome more Filipino students each year, and we are committed to supporting even more young Filipinos who want to pursue world‑class education in the U.S.,” the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section said in a statement.
Embassy Expands Advising and Scholarship Outreach
The Embassy’s EducationUSA advising centers in Manila and Cebu reported increased demand for guidance on admissions, scholarships, and graduate programs. Officials said interest is particularly strong in engineering, data science, public policy, and health sciences.
“Many Filipino families are surprised to learn how many scholarships, assistantships, and financial aid options are available,” said an EducationUSA Philippines adviser. “Our goal is to make sure students understand that studying in the U.S. is more attainable than they think.”
EducationUSA noted that the Philippines remains one of the fastest‑growing Southeast Asian sources of graduate students for U.S. universities.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties Through Education
The Embassy emphasized that educational exchange remains a key pillar of the U.S.–Philippines partnership, complementing cooperation in security, economic development, and cultural engagement.
“Filipino students contribute significantly to American campuses and communities,” the Public Affairs Section said. “They bring leadership, creativity, and global perspective — qualities that strengthen the bonds between our nations.”
The Embassy said it will continue promoting U.S. study opportunities through university fairs, virtual sessions, and partnerships with Philippine schools.
