HONGKONG (Manila 25) — Talented Filipina actress Gina Pareño continues to rake in the top international acting awards. For her work in Dante Mendoza’s “Serbis,” she won the Best Supporting Actress plum at the 3rd Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong.
The Asian Film Awards which coincides with the Hong Kong International Film Festival, is dubbed as the region’s version of the Oscars.
The veteran actress was nominated along with compatriot and “Serbis” co-star Jaclyn Jose and three other actresses from Japan and South Korea.
It’s the second international recognition for Pareño’s performance in “Serbis,” the country’s entry in the main competition section of the Cannes Film Festival last year.
Last year, she won Best Actress at the 6th Pacific Meridian Film Festival in Vladivostok, Russia, along with Mendoza who won Best Director.
At the HK Film Awards, Mendoza was also nominated for Best Director, competing with such world-famous filmmakers as John Woo (“Red Cliff”) and Miyazaki Hayao (“Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea”).
Japan’s Kore-Eda Hirokazu won Best Director for “Still Walking.”
South Korea’s Jung Woo-Sung won Best Supporting Actor for “The Good, the Bad, the Weird.”
China’s Zhou Xun won Best Actress for ‘The Equation of Love and Death.”
Best Actor went to Japan’s Motoki Masahiro for “Departures,’ which won the Oscar Best Foreign Language Film last month. (GoodNewsPhilippines)
