How Kamala Harris Can Reinvent the “GOP” Acronym

Part XLIII of the “Geopolitics” Series

Here are suggestions that will surely raise wonky comments in social-media policy debates. The “GOP” in the title means “Gift for One-day-old Persons.” It is another play on the acronym “GOP,” which this journalist suggested in the mid-2010s as the MAGA-Republican mantra of “Gutting the Old and the Poor.”

My son-in-law, Allan M. Albert, an executive at a business firm, suggested that this writer discuss in this column how Kamala Harris—when she becomes the POTUS—can begin a process to eliminate poverty. Yes, especially for people who reach their 62nd birthday. Why 62? It is the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) optional retirement age.

Albert’s idea is for the federal government to give a $10,000 gift to every newborn in the United States. The cash gift will be kept in trust by a bank, insurance company, financial institution, or even in a new division of the SSA. And invest in a pooled money-market account or even in blue-chip stocks. Suppose the SSA is chosen to administer the “Sixty-two Fund” (for want of a better name). In that case, it earns the usual administration fees and bonuses for successfully managing funds in money-market accounts or stock exchanges. Thus, it will help in maintaining the solvency of the SSA.

The “time deposit” may only be accessed when it matures—on the recipient’s 62nd birthday. Hopefully, the entire amount can be tax-free by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by then-President Harris.

According to math experts, one needs to know the interest rate to calculate the compounded interest earned on a $10,000 deposit over 62 years. Assuming a 5% annual interest rate, a $10,000 deposit would earn approximately $108,000 in interest when compounded annually after 62 years.

Thus, the recipient can retire early with a nest egg worth $118,000 (or more). This is in addition to the SSA’s monthly pension or the federal and most state, country, or city employees’ pension funds the early retiree will receive.

The average number of babies born daily in the United States is around 10,000. Google bases this on the 2021 CDC report of 3,664,292 births that year. However, birth rates are not consistent throughout the year. September is the most common birth month in the U.S., with an average of around 11,700 babies born daily.

Ergo, 10,000 times 10,000 is equal to $100,000,000. Notice that 10,000 is a one followed by four zeros. Therefore, it is a power of 10. But compare this to the American intervention in the Afghanistan (Civil) War that cost American taxpayers more than $300 million per day — by most accounts — for 20 years.

A simple idea by Allan Albert can go a long way in wiping out, or even dramatically mitigating, poverty in the United States and the Third World if American geopolitical policymakers think it will help promote and sustain world peace and socioeconomic progress.”

It does not mean the “Sixty-two Fund” can benefit society only after 62 years. It can also be a pump-priming mechanism for the U.S.S. economy. From Day One, it can make loans to federal or state projects or those financed by the U.S. Export-Import Bank. (It is safe, as always. Eximbank requires the guaranty of the central bank of the foreign country that makes the loan, which is used to purchase American technology, services, equipment, or an entire factory, often on a turnkey basis.)

It can support Kamala Harris’s proposal to invest $25,000 as a down payment for a first-time homeowner or condo buyer. The amount can be raised to $30,000 so that the gift for three newly born citizens will simplify the arithmetic for the home or condo-unit down payment.

Likewise, the “Sixty-two Fund” can be used to make more resources available as loans for the U.S. military’s educational program to recruit more cadets or boot camp trainees. A service of only four years can motivate an enlisted man to qualify to study for courses in medical, nursing, or engineering schools. After graduation and board licensing, he can apply to the U.S. Army’s Corps of Engineers or U.S. Veterans Administration medical facilities.

Or, better yet, make funds available and loan them to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU). It was founded as “America’s medical school for uniformed physicians.” Located in Bethesda, Maryland, USU looks for aspiring medical students with a passion for service who thrive in a collaborative environment. It can also have a College of Nursing, as the World Health Organization predicts a 13 million trained Nightingale shortage by 2030. This means recruits can direct and study at the USU after boot camp training. After graduation and internship, serve the 4-year first enlistment as a physician, nurse, or medic.

A simple idea by Allan Albert can go a long way in wiping out, or even dramatically mitigating, poverty in the United States and the Third World if American geopolitical policymakers think it will help promote and sustain world peace and socioeconomic progress.
