Los Angeles, CA — Tony Award winner Lea Salonga, who vocally brought to life voices of Jasmine from Aladdin and Mulan from Mulan, was honored Friday, August 19, as an official Disney Legend during the three-day D23 EXPO, in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena, according to Broadwayworld.com, an on-line site for Broadway Shows, Theater and Live Entertainment. The Disney Legends Awards program is a 24-year tradition of The Walt Disney Company.
Salonga was one of modern-day Disney Princesses honored at the event. Others included were Jodi Benson Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Paige O’Hara Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Linda Larkin speaking voice of Jasmine from Aladdin, and Anika Noni Rose Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog. Television icon Regis Philbin and Muppets creator Jim Henson were likewise honored.
Meanwhile, Salonga will also be performing in an upcoming Philippine Development Foundation ((PhilDev) star-studded benefit concert, “PhilDev Celebrates Broadway: Suites by Sondheim,” at the Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center on November 7, 2011, 7:30 p.m.
Directed by Victor Lirio and with music direction by Tom Myron, the concert will feature Filipino-American Broadway stars and will be devoted to the works of iconic American lyricist and composer, Stephen Sondheim. It will present musical numbers from Broadway shows such as Company, West Side Story, Saturday Night, Sweeney Todd, Anyone Can Whistle, A Little Night Music, Merrily We Roll Along, and Sunday in the Park with George.
PhilDev also announced the addition of three Filipino-American theater stars joining the all-Sondheim concert: Filipino-American film and theater actor, T.V. Carpio, currently on Broadway in Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark; stage and television actor Angel Desai, who starred in the Tony Award winning revival of Sondheim’s Company (opposite Tony nominee Raul Esparza); and Catherine Ricafort, currently on Broadway in Mamma Mia.
