In Luke 6, we see that Jesus ministers to all kinds of people and all kinds of needs to lead them to become followers of Jesus. In Luke 6, Jesus begins discipleship, teaching His followers what it means to be His followers.
It is what we call the Beatitudes – Following Jesus is not about doing, but first of all BEING AND ATTITUDES! Following Jesus deals with the inside of us, and then it will impact the outside of us.
Luke 6: 20-21, “God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours. God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.”
- Jesus is talking about being poor in Spirit! Until we realize how desperate we are for Jesus in our lives, we will never be able to be in His kingdom. We need a spirit of dependency on Jesus! We need a spirit of desperation and realizing that we are sinners and need Jesus. We need to maintain a spirit of humility to be part of His Kingdom, because it is His Kingdom, not our kingdom! “Seek first the Kingdom of God and HIs righteousness and all these other things shall be added unto you.”
- Jesus is talking about a spiritual hunger, and not a physical hunger. When we are spiritually hungry for the truth, then we will be satisfied by the Spirit. Are we really hungry for God’s Word, prayer, worship, and being with Jesus? I will only be satisfied to the level of my hunger!
- Jesus is talking about spiritual weeping, sorrow, but in due time, we will recapture the joy, peace, purpose, and laughter of life again. I remember when Cheryl died, and there was so much sorrow, pain, questions, anger, and frustration, but then the Lord ministered to me from Psalm 27.
Psalm 27:13-14; “Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait, patiently for the Lord.”
Lord, help me to focus on BEING vs. DOING! Help me to make the choice today to follow You!
