In Luke 21: 5-36, Jesus gives us a view of what the future will look like for His followers. We can see that many of these things are happening today. We can see the Bible coming to life daily.
Jesus talks about things happening right now, such as the deception of God’s people, wars and rumors of wars, insurrections, nations going to war with other nations, great earthquakes, famines, and plagues. There will also be great persecution for the followers of Jesus; the family will be divided and dysfunctional, and natural disasters and many things will be a sign of the last days.
But Jesus tells His followers how to continue the journey in the last days. Luke 21:34-36; Jesus tells us, “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware like a trap. For that day will come upon every one living on the earth. Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”
In the last days, it is not going to be easy to be a follower of Jesus. Jesus tells us:
- Watch Out! Keep your eyes looking at everything that is going on around us. We need to be aware of what is going on around us. We need to ask for wisdom from God on what decisions we should make on the journey.
- Do not let the things of this world dull your hearts! We need to make sure our hearts do not become calloused and begin to compromise with what is going on in the world that we live in. It is too easy to become more like the world and less like the Word of God. When our hearts are dulled, we lose the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives!
- Do not worry! We become so overwhelmed by social, political, economic, and spiritual events that we become worried. We can worry about the future or pray that God will equip and empower us to face the future! God’s Word tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but everything in prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, present your requests to God, and the God of peace will be with you….”
- Keep alert! This is not the time to become spiritually asleep but to stay awake and stay spiritually alert! No drifting, No dosing, No getting distracted by everything that is going on around us.
- Pray! Pray that you are filled with His Spirit and Word to be strong in the last days!
Today, Lord, help me to follow your traveler’s guide to being able to travel through everything that is happening in our world right now! Help me to remember always: “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”
