The journey of following Jesus means that we have responsibilities on the journey. Too many people today want the journey’s rights but not the journey’s responsibilities. If you go on a journey, you have specific responsibilities. You have to pack; you have to carry your luggage; you have to be at the airport at a particular time; you have to check in; you have to go through security; you have to wait until they call you to board, then you have to find your seat. It is tiring just thinking about the responsibilities before leaving for the journey.

In the spiritual journey, Paul writes about our responsibilities as a follower of Jesus. In Philippians 2: 12b-13, “Work hard to show the RESULTS of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.”

  • If we follow Jesus, our behavior should change, which should be evident to others. “Work hard to show the results of your salvation. ” Jesus changes our attitudes, behaviors, and conduct in life. So, can people look at our lives and see the difference that Jesus has made?
  • If we are a follower of Jesus, then we should obey God with deep reverence and fear. We do not obey God and His Word because we are afraid or because of religious rules. We obey God because we love, worship, honor, and adore Him. We follow because we want to please God! How many of us serve God out of duty and not delight?
  • On the journey of following Jesus – He is working in us and gives us the desire and the power to do what pleases Him! We have the Holy Spirit working in us and giving us the desire to follow Jesus and to live for Jesus in our daily journey.

Lord, today I pray that I will live up to the responsibility of following You!
