Need for Structural Reforms to Sustain Socioeconomic Growth and Avoid a Civil War

“Last year, we had the fastest economic growth in 38 years. While there is still more work to do, it’s clear we are finally building an American economy for the 21st century.” — President Joe Biden, as sent to his followers on Facebook. I replied to his posting by writing: “Congratulations, Mr. President, for your great achievement. Perhaps now you can push the reinvention of the American economy from ‘Crony Capitalism’ to ‘Cooperative (Co-op) Capitalism’ by helping labor unions become co-ops so that the labor co-ops can start investing in their employer-firm. And perhaps you can do more by launching what we suggested when you were the President-elect: the “Biden Back-to-Basics (B2B) Doctrine.” Your staff and advisers can read more of the B2B ideas at this link.

Forbes magazine has this to say about the fastest growth of the U.S. economy in 38 years.

President Biden has an excellent opportunity to sustain socioeconomic growth and undertake structural reforms.

No republic is safe that tolerates a privileged class or denies to any of its citizens equal rights and equal means to maintain them. — Frederick Douglass (1818-1895).

Douglass spoke of the “privileged class” in 1866, which now comprises about 614 billionaires (as of October 2020) that control conglomerates, some of which have employees that need social benefits like food stamps and public health insurance to survive. The employees of these conglomerates should be decently paid and given fringe benefits as a right.

The wealthy elite also controls so-many politicians that depend on the former for political contributions. Yes, political-lobby funds that some politicians use to torment the minorities, especially the poor and even the middle class, and create difficulties for the disadvantaged sectors to exercise suffrage.

“President Biden has an excellent opportunity to sustain socioeconomic growth and undertake structural reforms.”

Perhaps Mr. Biden may call a Renaissance Summit for these American billionaires and multimillionaires. He can invite them to join the proposed “Public-Private Partnerships” to launch projects. Yes, projects like the “Old-Man River Renaissance” (OMRR) initiatives can lead to sustainable potable water supplies for homes, farms, industries, and businesses. Or the “Greening” of American deserts. Or investing in Mexico to become the world’s fifth-biggest economy and, thereby, solve many of the problems in the American-Mexican border. Or even supporting the idea of replicating in 50 countries — as a global way to fight (and prevent) new pandemics and create medical-and-educational infrastructures — like the first “medical center” that the United States built in the early 1900s in Manila, Philippines, which was then an American colony.

This column has written about the said suggested initiatives. It will be easy for the White House staff and economic advisers to adopt the ideas and turn them into pre-feasibility studies and initial environmental-impact reports. They may use these studies and reports as “Talking Points” reference materials for the Renaissance Summit. Or even executive summaries.

Truth to tell, the United States of America faces the ills of the present pandemic and resulting economic dislocations plus the threat of political instability that can even lead to a second civil war, among many social cancers. The American billionaires and multimillionaires know that they have lots of fortune to lose if the country suffers such a military clash that will cause so many deaths and injuries and the destruction of lots of property, businesses, etc., infrastructures. Why not help and invest now to prevent such grim scenarios from happening? It will be less expensive than reconstruction after the feared-and-forecast destruction happens.

“Truth to tell, the United States of America faces the ills of the present pandemic and resulting economic dislocations plus the threat of political instability that can even lead to a second civil war, among many social cancers.”

Perhaps they should listen again to Frederick Douglass’ words: “It is no disparagement to truth, that it can only prevail where reason prevails. War begins where reason ends. The thing worse than rebellion is the thing that causes rebellion. What that thing is, we have been taught to our cost. It remains now to be seen whether we have the needed courage to have that cause entirely removed from the Republic. At any rate, to this great work of national regeneration and entire purification Congress must now address itself, with full purpose that the work shall this time be thoroughly done. The deadly upas, root and branch, leaf and fibre, body and sap, must be utterly destroyed. The country is evidently not in a condition to listen patiently to pleas for postponement, however, plausible, nor will it permit the responsibility to be shifted to other shoulders. Authority and power are here commensurate with the duty imposed. There are no cloud-flung shadows to obscure the way. Truth shines with brighter light and intenser heat at every moment, and a country torn and rent and bleeding implores relief from its distress and agony.” To read more about this hypothesis, please go to this link.
