NEW YORK – The New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs will present ¡Americano! The Musical in the Park! on Friday, June 10, 3:30 p.m. at Sunset Park in Brooklyn between 44th Street and 6th Avenue entrance. Manuel Castro, the Office of Immigrant Affairs Commissioner, will host the event.
The community event features a special performance from the cast of ¡Americano! The Musical. It is a story of an undocumented student who became an activist advocating for the DREAM Act, a legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for DREAMERS.
The play is based on the life story of Tony Valdovinos, who came to the U.S. with his parents when he was 5-years-old. When he turned 18, Valdovinos found out his parents had kept the truth from him — that he was not a legal citizen but a Dreamer when he tried to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Castro is a DREAMer and the first undocumented Commissioner appointed to an NYC Mayoral office; he grew up in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, as part of the early generation of undocumented youth activists known as DREAMers.
Besides the cast of ¡Americano!, he will be joined by Las Damas de Sunset Park, Mixteca, CUNY Becari@s, Council Member Alexa Avilés, Assembly Member Marcela Mitaynes, and the Sunset Park Business Improvement District.
