MANILA (Apr. 22) — The number of new overseas absentee voters (OAVs) or registrants now stands at 50,122, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary and Chairperson of the Overseas Absentee voting Secretariat (OAVs) Rafael E. Seguis has announced.
This was based on April 20 2009 tally received from various Philippine Embassies, Missions, Consulates and Offices The total number of new OAV registrants for the different regions worldwide are as follows:
Asia and the Pacific – 13,136
Americas – 12,342
Europe – 7,298
Middle East and Africa – 5,756
A total of 11,590 new OA Voters have so far registered at the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) OAV registration centers.
The top ten Posts, in terms of the number of new OAV registrants are: Hong Kong (4,917), Los Angeles (3,950), London (2,460), Toronto (2,322), Singapore (2,232), Dubai (1,856), New York (1,743), Washington DC (1,541), Brunei (1,365), and Chicago (1,182).
By country, the following are the top ten: USA, China, Canada, UK, Singapore, UAE, Italy, Taiwan, Japan, and Brunei.
According to Undersecretary Seguis, these figures will increase tremendously as the campaign for promotion of OAV activities in all Philippine Foreign Service Posts (FSPs) intensify during the remaining period of OAV registration. OAV registration will last until 31 August 2009.
He added that the DFA-OAVS, COMELEC-COAV, and all the FSPs and Offices are closely collaborating to promote the on-going exercise, which includes the OAVS issuing a series of instructions to garner one million OAV registrants for the 2010 elections.
