Pacquiao-Mayweather Fight Still Up In The Air

by Joseph G. Lariosa

CHICAGO (FAXX/jGLi) – Naysayers dousing cold water on the possible match-up between undefeated American Floyd Mayweather and eight-division Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao appear to be part of an unwitting “smoke screen that doesn’t allow for reasonable negotiation” to make the fight the world wants to see from ever happening.

When told that Stephen Espinoza of Show Time network predicted that Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will never happen because Mayweather has some differences with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, Arum said, “I have no differences with Mayweather.

“Sometimes statements are made which are mere excuses for a fight not to happen. If that is the case of fear or not, I don’t know. I have no animosity with anybody or Mayweather. With what being said now is really unfortunate. What it does is throw up smokescreen that doesn’t allow for reasonable negotiations. Negotiations should start. People should sit down to have any precondition to work out the issues.”

In phone interview with the Fil Am Extra Exchange, Arum said he will be announcing next week if Manny Pacquiao is going to face American Timothy Bradley or Russian Ruslan Provodnikov on April 12, 2014 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Regarding the report that Golden Boy Promotions’ CEO Richard Schaefer has also some  differences with him that  could sideline the legendary Mayweather-Pacquiao mega bout, the 82-year-old Arum said, “Again this is really counterproductive to having the fight happen. What should happen is that  people should sit down in a room; air out what the differences are; what problems are. And try to come to resolutions. That’s how  adults do it. That’s how negotiations usually are conducted. All these statements are just smokescreen to justify that negotiations that should be happening are not happening.”

Arum said, “Manny is fighting in April. What will happen in September will happen in September. If they want the Pacquiao-Mayweather to happen, they should sit down in a room and have any unresolved issue taken cared of and try to reach a solution.”

On reports that Pacquiao-Mayweather is going to happen in September, Arum said, “It’s a lot of wishful thinking.  Unless the story is confirmed by Manny himself or (Michael) Koncz that a negotiation has taken place, it is a non-story. This article quotes a reliable source. Who’s the reliable source. It’s not Manny, not Koncz, not me. Who is the reliable source? Who is it?”

Manny’s convincing win over Brandon Rios in Macau last November had revived talks of his oft-shelved meeting with Mayweather, which could be the richest prize fight in history. Manny’s fight with either Bradley or Provodnikov on April 12 could be his tune-up match with Mayweather in September.

Calls for Manny to hang up his gloves were heard after Juan Manuel Marquez blindsided him with a wicked right straight last December (2012) that dropped Manny to the canvas and caused him to lose consciousness for a few minutes.
