MANILA — Philippine Airlines (PAL), Asia’s first commercial airline, marked its 85th anniversary with the unveiling of its newest flagship aircraft, the Airbus A350‑1000, during a ceremony at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the celebration, calling the milestone “a reaffirmation of PAL’s legacy of resilience, service, and world‑class Filipino hospitality”.
The event, themed “Legacy in Flight: Celebrating 85 Years of Philippine Airlines and the Unveiling of the A350‑1000,” highlighted PAL’s historic role in connecting Filipinos to the world. Marcos noted that the airline “has remained a steady presence in the country’s national story through changing times and growing challenges”.
A350‑1000: The New Flagship of Long‑Haul Travel
The A350‑1000 is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and only the tenth worldwide, making PAL a regional pioneer in next‑generation long‑haul aviation. The aircraft features a tri‑class cabin with 382 seats—42 in Business Class, 24 in Premium Economy, and 316 in Economy—designed for comfort, privacy, and efficiency.
President Marcos emphasized the aircraft’s significance for the country’s aviation competitiveness. “The unveiling of the Airbus A350‑1000 underscores the importance of keeping pace with a rapidly evolving aviation industry,” he said. “Taken together, these milestones strengthen our aviation sector, expand connectivity, and open doors to trade, tourism, and investment”.
A Symbol of PAL’s Resurgence and Global Ambition
PAL Holdings president Lucio Tan III described the A350‑1000 as a powerful emblem of the airline’s renewed confidence on the global stage. “The A350‑1000 aircraft stands as a powerful symbol of our resurgence,” Tan said. “It represents our confidence to compete globally, while remaining deeply rooted in who we are as Filipinos”.
Tan added that PAL’s transformation is inseparable from national development. “Our role as the flag carrier is not simply commercial. It is a responsibility that we take very seriously. We exist to connect people, support livelihoods, and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development,” he said.
Sustainability and Innovation at the Core
The A350‑1000’s new‑generation design brings up to 25 percent reduction in fuel burn and carbon emissions, aligning with PAL’s push toward more sustainable operations. The aircraft is also compatible with sustainable aviation fuel, a key step toward greener long‑haul travel.
Beyond environmental benefits, the aircraft enhances PAL’s cargo capacity and operational efficiency. Its long‑range capability opens new possibilities for transpacific routes, particularly to the United States and Canada—markets central to PAL’s long‑haul strategy.
A Celebration Rooted in History and Future Vision
Founded in 1941, PAL holds the distinction of being the first Asian airline to cross the Pacific (in 1946) and to fly to Europe (in 1947). Marcos highlighted this legacy, saying PAL has “carried with it the warmth and hospitality that define us as a people” while showcasing the country’s natural beauty and cultural richness to the world.
As PAL looks ahead, nine A350‑1000s are scheduled for delivery through 2027, signaling a long‑term commitment to modernization and global competitiveness. “Like the Philippine flag, we will continue to stand tall and strong as the national carrier,” Tan said, quoting his grandfather, Lucio Tan Sr. “The Philippines is Philippine Airlines, and Philippine Airlines is the Philippines”.
