NEW YORK – The search for 2013 Diwa ng Kalayaan (Spirit of Independence) and Mrs. Kalayaan (Mrs. Independence) is now open, the Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) has announced. The winners of the two contests will reign for the duration of the 115th anniversary commemoration of the Declaration of Philippine Independence being celebrated this year.

Entry application forms for the Diwa ng Kalayaan beauty, brains and talent contest may be obtained by calling search and gala committee chairs Joyce Castillo at (848) 467-0269 or Maryann Sanagustin at (908) 456-7063, or PIDCI President Fe Martinez at (973) 222-0085 or any member of the PIDCI Board of Directors.
The deadline for submission of entries to the Diwa ng Kalayaan contest is April 5, 2013.
According to PIDCI, the committee has received three entries from New Jersey, namely: Melissa George, Kristine Liwag, and Camille Jessica Cunanan, all 17 years old; and two entries from New York, Judith Ashley Quilapio, 19 years old; and Allyson Prada.
Mi Yeong Caroline of Clifton, New Jersey is the reigning 2012 Diwa ng Kalayaan (Spirit of Independence).
The 2013 Diwa ng Kalayaan (Spirit of Independence) will be selected at ceremonies during a Coronation Pageant and Gala at the Empire Meadowlands Hotel by Clarion (new name) at No. 2 Harmon Plaza, Secaucus, New Jersey 07094 on Saturday, May 4, 2013.
On the other hand, entry forms for the Mrs. Kalayaan may be obtained from contest and gala committee chairperson Elvira Reyes at (551) 208-4986 or Albert Diala at (347) 260-8063, PIDCI President Fe Martinez or any member of the PIDCI Board of Directors.
Deadline for submission of entries to the Mrs. Kalayaan contest is February 22, 2013
PIDCI has said that the committee has received four entries: Jeanette Corpuz of Connecticut, Rose PaciaLaBelle, Ernestine Hollins, both of New York, and Josephine Gaurana.
Margie Beof Wisotsky of Glendale, Queens, New York is the current Mrs. Kalayaan titleholder.
2013 Mrs. Kalayaan will be crowned at a pageant and gala at the Astoria World Manor at 25-22 Astoria Boulevard, Astoria, Queens, New York 11102 on Saturday, March 23, 2013.
The grand prize for the two contests is a round trip airline ticket to the Philippines with land arrangements. In addition, the winners will be Ambassadors of Goodwill of the Filipino and Filipino American community of the Northeastern U.S. and PIDCI to the 8th Ambassador, Consuls General and Tourism Directors Tour of the Philippines on July 9 to 11, 2013 in partnership with the promotion effort of PIDCI and the Philippine Department of Tourism’s “It’s more fun in the Philippines.”
