WASHINGTON, D.C. — Incoming U.S. Ambassador Lee Lipton met with Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel G. Romualdez in Washington, D.C., reaffirming the importance of people‑to‑people ties and community‑driven cooperation as both nations look to deepen their longstanding partnership

Romualdez and Lipton discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation across economic engagement, defense and security, people‑to‑people ties, and regional collaboration — areas both sides have identified as pillars of the modern alliance. The meeting comes as the Philippines and the United States commemorate 80 years of diplomatic relations and the 75th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty, a cornerstone of regional stability.

Both envoys also highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation in emerging strategic sectors, including critical minerals processing, energy, advanced manufacturing, and resilient supply chains — areas increasingly central to Indo‑Pacific economic security. They likewise exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the Philippines’ 2026 chairship of ASEAN and its candidacy for a non‑permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. Romualdez welcomed Lipton and expressed confidence that bilateral relations would continue to grow under their shared commitment to advancing the interests of both nations and their peoples.

Who is Lee Lipton?
Lipton, recently confirmed by the U.S. Senate, is a Florida businessman with five decades of experience in aviation, apparel, and hospitality. Before his appointment to Manila, he served as Chief of Staff to the U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States, a role he assumed in January 2025. His background blends private‑sector leadership with diplomatic exposure, making him the first non‑career diplomat to hold the Manila post in many years.

During his Senate confirmation hearing, Lipton emphasized his support for the “ironclad alliance” between the United States and the Philippines and underscored the need to counter unlawful maritime actions in the region. He also highlighted cooperation in supply chains, semiconductors, critical minerals, and infrastructure as key areas for future collaboration.

Strengthening a Forward‑Looking Partnership
The Embassy noted that both ambassadors discussed expanding collaboration in trade and investment, defense and national security, cultural exchanges, and shared regional priorities.

Lipton is expected to assume his post in Manila later this month after completing briefings and presenting his credentials to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
