Special screening Nov. 16: Premiere of “Not Your Model Minority”

NEW YORK – The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) hosts a special screening on Nov. 16 from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m ET of the documentary, “Not Your Model Minority.”

The documentary is latest by award-winning filmmaker Jon Osaki, which will premiere at the APIAHF and APAICS VOICES Conference: Building Together – Share. Learn. Inspire.”

According to APAICS, “Not Your Model Minority” explores the origins of the stereotype and the intersections with pat and present anti-Asian violence. It reveals the many ways that the model minority myth has been used to create a wedge between communities of color. And it perpetuates divisive narratives and examines opportunities to build power and progress toward addressing systemic racism in America.

After the screening, the event will feature Osaki and documentary speakers Mike Ishii (Community Organizer, Tsuru for Solidarity) and Ellen Wu (Associate Professor, Indiana University Bloomington and author of The Color of Success: Asian Americans and the Origins of the Model Minority. Heaven Chee (Stop Repeating History) will moderate.
