U.S. Assures PH Of Its Support To Rebuild Storm Affected Areas

CHICAGO (jFAXX) – United States Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew expressed sympathies last Thursday (Dec. 19) to the people of the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in Washington, D.C.

Secretary Lew relayed his sympathies to his Philippine counterpart, Secretary of Finance Cesar Purisima, who paid him a courtesy call in his Treasury office in Washington, D.C.

A press handout distributed by the White House press office said Secretary Lew was glad the U.S. was “able to provide assistance and relief in the immediate aftermath of the storm, and we will continue to stand with the Philippines as it rebuilds.”

In a statement prepared for delivery, Secretary Lew told Secretary Purisima that in “addition to the United States government’s response, we are pleased with the fast and flexible response that we have seen from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. We look forward to working with the multilateral development banks to move forward with well-designed projects that assist the affected population as they rebuild.

MAKING GREAT STRIDES

“Today, we discussed the outlook for the U.S., the Philippine, the Asian and the global economies. Strong economic leadership in the Philippines is helping to make the Philippine economy more resilient.  The Aquino administration is making great strides to improve governance, including fighting corruption, and to reform the Philippine economy, which has become one of the fastest growing in the region, and I thanked the Secretary for his efforts.”

The 25th White House Chief of Staff (2012 to 2013) added, “During the first term of the Obama Administration, we laid out our vision for the Asia-Pacific rebalance based on America’s stake in a prosperous and stable region.  In the second term, we are continuing to build on those commitments to expand trade and investment, strengthen regional institutions, and deepen our engagement with emerging powers in the region.

LOOKS TO BOOST GLOBAL GROWTH

“The United States’ bilateral relationship with the Philippines is an important one, in a key region, one that is highlighted by the Philippines’ participation in the Obama Administration’s Partnership for Growth.  In line with our commitment to this relationship, under President Aquino’s Administration, the U.S. Treasury is providing a robust program of technical assistance to support implementation of the Philippines’ economic policy. This program will become one of the most intensive technical assistance programs in the world in 2014.”

He was pleased with his meeting with Secretary Purisima and “looks forward to continuing to work together to boost global growth.”
