NEW YORK – At the heart of the ethereal elegance of the International Indigenous Fashion Week© (IIFW) was the presence of Victor Baguilat Jr., founder and CEO of Kandama Social Enterprise, a platform that advocates empowering women and the youth, in the Cannes Indigenous Arts & Fashion Festival (IAFF), which IIFW produced.
IAFF is a runway showcase presenting the best indigenous arts & crafts during the world’s biggest film festival in Cannes, France, on May 19, 2023. Its profound purpose is to raise awareness about the plight of Indigenous Peoples across the globe, focusing on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
Baguilat was one of seven acclaimed indigenous designers from around the world that showcased his creation in the fashion show. He was joined by his fellow designers, Dante Biss-Grayson—Sky Eagle Collection (NM, USA), Alyssia Sutherland—Ally’s Ribbons (MB, Canada), Natasha Thompson—Tasha Marie (ON, Canada), Christine Tienkamp—SS River Designs (SK, Canada), Stacey Mitchell—Stacey Mitchell (NY, USA), and Rebekah Jarvey—Rebekah Jarvey (MT, USA).
The arts and fashion festival transcended boundaries, curating a magnificent display of indigenous arts and crafts. Legendary producer and director Martin Scorsese graced the occasion with his revered family and cast members from Killers of the Flower Moon, including Tantoo Cardinal, a Canadian actress of Cree and Metis heritage.

The prestigious event reached its crescendo with the glorious creations of Kandama, leaving an indelible impression on all that witnessed its breathtaking finale. Kandama’s creations have captivated international audiences at fashion events, gracing renowned runways at Melbourne Fashion Week, Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival, New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, and several other distinguished venues.
Marking its 10th international show of offering formal evening looks and bespoke tailored coats, Kandama’s unveiling of its “Cannes” collection witnessed the convergence of sophistication and ethereal reverie. Kandama’s masterful artistry deftly intertwined the timeless elegance of Ifugao weaves with themes of femininity, modernity, and the enduring grace of classic Filipiniana. Through a meticulously woven 12-piece collection, an exquisite and romantic narrative unfolded, inviting wearers to embark on a transformative journey of self-expression.
The extraordinary collection was brought to life through the generous collaboration with reputable brands that contributed to Kandama’s remarkable artistry, including Punique, The Brave Story, Twelve Topaz, Twin Starr, and Accents and Petals.
Kandama Social Enterprise’s vision is to empower indigenous women, particularly in Julongan village, Kiangan, Ifugao, by providing livelihood, conducting workshops, donating looms, and building weaving centers.
Its mission is to provide economic opportunities to women, preserve the tradition of handloom weaving, and help the community protect the environment. Kandama applies commercial strategies to make its social impact possible as a social enterprise.
