NEW YORK — The USTA has confirmed that Lindsay Davenport, who took over the captaincy of the Billie Jean King Cup in 2024, will remain in charge of the American squad for at least two more seasons. The extension comes after a successful run in which she guided the U.S. team to a 5–2 record in Billie Jean King Cup competition, including a runner-up finish in 2025—the country’s first appearance in the Final since 2018.
The U.S. fell to Italy in the championship tie, but the campaign was widely seen as a breakthrough for a program that had not reached the final round in seven years. Davenport’s leadership was credited with helping to harness the depth of American women’s tennis, which currently boasts multiple players in the world’s top 10 rankings.
Davenport’s Legacy
A former world No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam singles champion, Davenport is one of the most accomplished U.S. Billie Jean King Cup players in history. She helped lead the American team to titles in 1996, 1999, and 2000 during her playing career. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2014.
In announcing her renewal, Davenport emphasized the honor of continuing to serve as captain. “It’s an incredible honor to serve as U.S. Billie Jean King Cup captain, and I’m thrilled and humbled to continue doing it, especially during such an amazing time for women’s tennis in America,” she said. “We have so many amazing ladies competing and winning at the highest levels year-round, and it’s a privilege to get to work with them while wearing the red, white and blue. I’m so looking forward to what we can accomplish together in the years ahead.”
Current Landscape of U.S. Women’s Tennis
The renewal comes at a time of resurgence for American women’s tennis. In 2025, four U.S. players—Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, Jessica Pegula, and Madison Keys—finished the season ranked in the world’s top 10. It marked the first time since 2004 that four American women ended the year inside the top 10, a season that also featured Davenport herself at No. 1 alongside Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Jennifer Capriati.
This depth has given the U.S. team renewed strength in the Billie Jean King Cup, where multiple lineup options are available for both singles and doubles. Davenport’s ability to manage that talent pool has been cited as a key factor in the team’s recent success.
U.S. Team Sets Its Sights on Pursuing Its First Title
The U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team will next compete in the 2025 Qualifying round in April, with both opponent and venue to be determined by draw. Davenport’s extension ensures continuity in leadership as the team seeks to build on its momentum and pursue its first title since 2017.
The renewal also underscores the USTA’s confidence in Davenport’s vision for the program. With her blend of championship pedigree and coaching experience, she is expected to continue shaping a team capable of contending for titles in the years ahead.
