NEW YORK—Students of NYC Youth Journalism will hold a Day of Action at City Hall Park on April 18 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. to raise awareness of the youth journalism equity gap. They will be joined by City Council leaders who will introduce a resolution supporting their cause.
In addition, the coalition will announce Journalism for All, a groundbreaking new high school journalism curriculum and teacher training with Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. The day of action, sponsored by the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus, begins with a press conference at 9 a.m.
According to the coalition, only 26% of New York City public high schools have a student news publication, and only 7% of the 100 schools with the highest poverty rates do. They said the YJC’s new Journalism for All initiative is designed to reverse the trends and ensure equitable journalism opportunities for NYC students.
The YJC students, including officials from CUNY Newmark J-School and City Council members, will speak during the event.
